Telehandlers are a multi-purpose machine that is able to lift, move, and place materials. They are versatile enough to be used in several different industries, making them a popular choice for many business owners. Continue reading to learn more about these useful machines!

History

The telehandler was originally called a telescopic forklift and was first introduced in 1977. Creating the telehandler was like combining a forklift, crane, and backhoe into one monster piece of equipment! Everyone was blown away by this innovation and it quickly became a highly sought after tool.

Several manufacturers began creating their own versions of the telehandler and different attachments and features were slowly added. The construction industry was the first to take hold of this technology and construction sites continue to be one of the most common places you’ll see a telehandler in action.

Classification

A telehandler is classified as a Class 7 vehicle, or a variable reach rough terrain forklift vehicle. It can utilize different attachments to complete lifting, moving, and placement tasks. They can be used at the start and end of a project! For example, telehandlers can be used to stage the materials at the start of a job and also be used to clean up materials at the end of the day.

Uses

It’s evident that these machines are extremely versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways. They are essentially designed to reach elevated areas and move objects. With so many available attachments, telehandlers can act as a working platform, forklift, crane or other essential jobsite equipment.

Another great advantage of these machines is their ability to work in tough environments. Many models have four-wheel drive capabilities, meaning you can easily work outdoors.

It’s important to determine how much height and weight you’ll need in order to select the best model. Different options are rated for different workloads and it’s necessary to follow the intended use for performance and safety.

Safe Operating

In order to safely operate a telehandler, you should complete all required training and be familiar with the specific model you will be using. Always follow the manufacturer recommendations and pay attention to the manual! Maintenance goes hand in hand with safety. Along with familiarizing yourself with the equipment and completing safety training, you should only operate the telehandler if it has been properly maintained. Perform an inspection before use and test all functions before completing a task.
